Surface Design Series: #1 Painting & Bleaching

This fun series of Surface Design workshops is intended to introduce students to a wide variety of techniques allowing them to experiment and explore the world of surface design. Students will leave each class with sample of each technique which they will have created. Plus, they will be given instructions sheets so they can continue to work with the various techniques at home.
*For all classes, please consider using fabric sourced from thrift shops (ex: sheets, shirts, curtains, etc)

#1 Painting and Discharge/Bleaching

Students will explore several different mediums including: painting with dyes, painting with fabric paints, using fabric sprays, and augmenting acrylic paints with textile medium for painting upon fabric. Students will also work with discharge paste and bleach. If we have time, we will also experiment with using shaving cream for creating a marbled look on fabric.

Students will need to provide:
1) 4-6 pieces of light-colored fabrics 6"x6" to 24"x24" in size (students are welcome to use shirts)
2) 2 pieces of black or very dark-colored fabrics for working with discharge techniques.
3) Rubber or disposable gloves
4) Some plastic baggies to carry home wet fabric
5) An apron or wear clothing that can be dirtied by dyes

Students may also want to consider bringing an old/craft iron to help with heat-setting their designs and drying their items. The instructor will have an iron to share but having several in class will make things go faster.
