Cut it Through!

Paper cutting, from historical roots to the contemporary art scene, demonstrates its multi-facets. Simple techniques: cutting, stenciling, modeling_ permit to create large installations and intimate works. During this intensive class of serious fun, participants will discover the incredible variety of applications of this art form from fine arts to public art commissions. During the class, we will conceive and produce works as different as unique story-telling images with techniques on how to produce them in stenciled editions, pop-ups, dimensional work, wearable sculptures or short stop-motion animation. Cutting different papers and experimenting with scale, we will keep an open mind to adapt them to other materials and explore new territories. Tips, tricks and resources will be provided. No experience necessary.

Student Tools & Supply List:

- cutting mat

- exacto knife and blades 11 or equivalent

- water-based paint (acrylic) or stamps, inks, etc...

- tracing paper

- glue: sticks and/or PVA, scotch tape

- stapler

- images: old magazine, photocopies, or inspirational images (photo/art images or your own work)

- optional : makeup sponges, finding and trimmings for embellishment, any found materials to experiment cutting large format (plastic, leather, rubber, textiles), transparent papers (vellum, tissue...), any scraps decorative papers to use in collages, objects to stencils: bags, tee-shirts, umbrellas, lamp shades.

- 3-rings binders and clear sheet protectors to keep notes and small paper cuttings

The instructor will provide supplies for projects which are included in the class fee.


Béatrice Coron is a studio artist who creates papercutting, artist books, digital animations and public art. She has made books out of cut paper scrolls 50 feet long, others to wear as dresses or masks; hundreds of surprising shapes and environments for words and thoughts. Her work can be seen in major collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Walker Art Center. You can see her public art in metal and glass in subways (New York City, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Chicago), airport (Charlotte, NC) and castle among others.
