Gel Printing with Botanicals

Ages: 15 & up

Levels: All

Sessions: One

Instructor: Maren Oates

Learn how to create unique monoprints without a press using a gel printing plate and botanical materials.

In this class we'll use an 8" x 10" gel plate with acrylic paint and natural elements, such as leaves, grasses, and flowers. We'll work to create prints that can stand on their own, but gel printed papers are also wonderful for collage, cards, art journals, or other mixed media projects.

Unlike many traditional printmaking techniques, gel printing has minimal set up and is easy to do almost anywhere. If you aren't familiar with gel printing, botanical material is a fun place to start. And, if you have experience with a gel plate incorporating leaves and other natural elements provides some exciting new possibilities for textures and masks in your work.

Students will learn:
- The basic materials and techniques used for gel printing
- How to create unique gel printed papers using botanical items, such as leaves and flowers as textures and masks.
- A basic understanding of how different paints and papers may impact your finished prints.

Students will create gel printed papers using acrylic paint and a variety of natural materials as textures and masks. Gel prints are each a unique work of art on their own, but work wonderfully for collage, cards, altered books, or incorporated into mixed media works.
