ART HOW2ā€™S 2020: STEM-2- STEAM: Integrate! Innovate! Imagineā€¦

Participants will be introduced to interactive projects as vehicles for teaching important understandings and skills all students need to learn. Projects will be created from mostly recyclable materials. Each project will have a framework adaptable to grade level abilities, alignment to WA Arts Learning Standards, and integrate STEAM components.

Beginning/Intermediate Silversmithing

Enameling on Copper

Enameling is the art of fusing powdered glass to metal. This class will teach the three basic techniques of enameling. Students will learn to stencil, cloisonne and chambleve on copper.

Coiled Pine Needle Basket Weaving - Beginning

You will learn the basic methods of coiled weaving. We will use pine needles as our weaving material, though this technique can be used with other materials as well. You will start your weaving around a decorative center. You will use the basic swirling stitch gives your woven piece stability and is very attractive. Learn how to shape your basket to its desired form.

Fused Geometric Wall Clock

You will be creating a bright colorful contemporary wall clock which will add a splash of color to your home or office.

Students will learn basic fusing concepts and will have a chance to use frit, stringers, and nuggets with other geometric shapes of glass. We will discuss how to drill a hole in your project and the placement of the hole for proper mounting on the wall.

Fused Christmas Cookie Ornaments

You will be creating fused glass ornaments to hang on your tree and/or to give as gifts.

Students will learn basic fusing concepts and will decorate precut ornament shapes with frit, stringers, noodles and nuggets. We will also add some dichroic scrap pieces for some extra bling.

Block Printed Holiday Cards

In this three-hour workshop we’ll draw and carve holiday card designs and hand print them on cardstock using water-soluble inks! We’ll use a variety of ink colors and several decorative techniques will be demonstrated for experimentation.

Everyone will walk away with a set of their very own hand-printed greeting cards and envelopes, their carved block and all the knowledge you need to do it all again at home!

Cold Enamel Jewelry

Create faux enamel effects on metal with Iced Enamels®. Learn how to use enameling powders, enameling medium and resin to permanently adhere color to metal. This technique will create the same look as torch-fired or kiln-fired enamels but without the heat. Learn to combine Enamel Medium with quick-melting Relique powders, to create beautiful mixed-media metalwork in minutes. Cold Enameling will never rub off, fade or yellow over time.

Intro to a Jewelry Saw

Enter a new realm of jewelry techniques by learning how to use a jeweler's saw. Bring your own designs, or choose one of our samples to cut out of metal with a saw and create a pendant. Students will learn both sawing and piercing metal as well as finishing and filing steps to creating a smooth, eye-catching piece.

Block Printing & Carving on Fabric

Woodblock printing on textiles is the process of printing patterns on textiles, usually of linen, cotton or silk, by means of incised wooden blocks. It is the earliest, simplest and slowest of all methods of textile printing. Come learn how to create woodblocks and design your own scarf.

New Bark Beginnings

For all those new (or old) to basketmaking, one of the greatest pleasures is weaving with soft pliable barks. In this workshop, we combine willow strips and options for

Printmaking & Collage

We will explore techniques creating your own printed imagery using to create inspirational Collage artworks! Learn the basics of creating monotype, collagraph and relief printed images. All of these methods create unique results; the pressure of printing creates texture and pattern not possible when painting directly on paper. Skeined Willow Bracelets

Bracelets are made from skeined willow wrapped over a pre-formed ring. Embellishment of hand skeined willow braid added to wrapped bracelet ring completes the project. Both natural (white) and buff (red-brown) willows skeines are used for the braid.

Tiny Glass Pumpkins - An Intro to Lampwork Glass

Create small glass pumpkins by heating glass rods in the flame of a bench-mounted torch and transferring the molten gather onto the end of a stainless steel mandrel. Learn to control the glass and form it into a sphere which can then be shaped into a pumpkin while still molten. A great introduction to the basics of manipulating hot glass on a very small scale!

Woven Oval

What a fun table or wall project that introduces you to the wonders of willow bark! Basics of setup and twining, your own shaping and finish are great all level skills of basketmaking. This piece is a delight to make with naturals: soft, strong, and yielding. I hang mine on the wall, and use it on the tabletop as well.

Getting Real with Resin

Learn to work with ICE Resin, a non-toxic jeweler's grade resin that gives you endless possibilities for your jewelry designs! Pour the resin into a bezel setting or silicone mold, or even use it over paper. You can use lots of different images and materials with ICE Resin that will be sure to get your creativity running wild! You will be able to carefully take your piece with you after class, or come back the next day to pick it up.

Fused Penguin Plate

This workshop will give you a chance to create a fused glass project even if you have never worked with any kind of glass.  Students will learn basic fusing concepts and will have a chance to use various sizes of frit with the precut shapes.  You will be creating an 8" square curved plate with a penguin in the snow.

GOBLETS

Making goblets can be a difficult and potentially frustrating process.  Small mistakes that are not addressed are compounded through each step of the process.  This class will focus on breaking down the process into simple and easily digestible steps, highlighting the fact that blowing nice cups is not about employing "a bunch of tricks," but instead about doing the simple things well.

Intro to Flameworking in Borosilicate-Simple Ornaments

Explore the basics of lampworking with clear borosilicate glass. Learn how to melt glass rods with a bench-mounted torch and then manipulate the molten gather on the end of the rod with tools to create simple round and flattened shapes, and even twisted icicles, all of which we will turn into small hanging ornaments.

Demystifying Camera Exposure & Focus

Learn what ISO 200, f5.6 and histogram mean, and why you should care. Understand what all those focus modes do. Keep detail in bright whites and saturated colors instead of blowing them out. Capture as much shadow detail as possible. Have blur only when wanted for artistic effect.

Beginning Woodcut and Linocut Printmaking

This course will introduce students to relief printmaking using linoleum as a support. We will start with reductive technique and move on to multiple blocks. Color mixing will be covered.

Electro Etched Copper Pendants or Earrings

Electro-etching is a fabulous low-tech and low-cost way to add design and dimension to a flat sheet of metal. Beginning & Intermediate Bronze Metal Clay Jewelry

This class will teach beginning students how to manipulate the clay by using molding compound and textures. Students will complete 3-5 projects during class. Intermediate students will learn additional gem setting techniques and further hone their skills.

Lampwork Glass Beadmaking

If you're fascinated by baubles, bangles, and beads, this one day class is for you. You will make many glass beads as you learn the basic skills of heating Moretti (soft) glass, applying it to a mandrel, and shaping it with tools.
