ART HOW2’S 2020: STEM-2- STEAM: Integrate! Innovate! Imagine…

Participants will be introduced to interactive projects as vehicles for teaching important understandings and skills all students need to learn. Projects will be created from mostly recyclable materials. Each project will have a framework adaptable to grade level abilities, alignment to WA Arts Learning Standards, and integrate STEAM components.

Breathing Baskets

Introduction to Creative Non-Fiction and Memoir

Fused Geometric Wall Clock

You will be creating a bright colorful contemporary wall clock which will add a splash of color to your home or office.

Students will learn basic fusing concepts and will have a chance to use frit, stringers, and nuggets with other geometric shapes of glass. We will discuss how to drill a hole in your project and the placement of the hole for proper mounting on the wall.

Alcohol Ink Techniques

Working with alcohol inks is different than with any other medium. It can be lots of fun to watch the colors blends together without a brush. Move the paper around to get inspiring effects. Use a brush and and control it a bit to get watercolor-like effects. The colors are vibrant and each piece is totally unique to the artist.

Cold Enamel Jewelry

Create faux enamel effects on metal with Iced Enamels®. Learn how to use enameling powders, enameling medium and resin to permanently adhere color to metal. This technique will create the same look as torch-fired or kiln-fired enamels but without the heat. Learn to combine Enamel Medium with quick-melting Relique powders, to create beautiful mixed-media metalwork in minutes. Cold Enameling will never rub off, fade or yellow over time.

Intro to a Jewelry Saw

Enter a new realm of jewelry techniques by learning how to use a jeweler's saw. Bring your own designs, or choose one of our samples to cut out of metal with a saw and create a pendant. Students will learn both sawing and piercing metal as well as finishing and filing steps to creating a smooth, eye-catching piece.

Decorative Fused Glass Lantern

You will be creating a beautiful decorative lantern with fused panels to enjoy outdoors or indoors.

You will learn basic fusing concepts in this class. Students will create four custom fused glass panels using frit, stringers, nuggets and enamel paints.

Oil Painting Workshop

Oil painting is a fun way to express your creative spirit. It's the most forgiving of all painting mediums. As you develop your skills, you'll soon be on your way! We will learn how to blend colors, which brush to use and how to apply the paint. You will be guided through different techniques such as: wet-on-wet, fat over lean, palette knives painting, and so on.

Goblets

Learn to blow thin glass cups, stems and blown feet and learn to put them together using the "garage". We will also learn exercises to practice building skills outside of the class. Teamwork and repetition will be emphasized.

We will paint and draw a variety of subjects- landscapes, animals, portraits, and still lives, and explore color, value, shadow, perspective, materials, and brush handling in this fun and informative class for everyone! Relief Printmaking

This course will introduce students to relief printmaking using linoleum as a support. We will start with reductive technique and move on to multiple blocks. Color mixing will be covered.

Students will learn how to prepare their paper, register their prints for multiple printings, carve linoleum plates, mix colors and handle the press.

ABC's of Painting on Silk

In this fun workshop, students will learn the basics of painting upon silk using the Serti technique. In the workshop, students will learn the basics of how to select silks for painting. They will learn to draw their design on silk and apply resist to the pattern as well as learning how to paint on the silk using silk dyes.

Successful Milky Way Photos

Efficiently shoot dramatic Milky Way images by following a straightforward set of steps to plan, capture and post-process in Lightroom or Photoshop. The camera can see much more of the night sky than the human eye, but you will need editing to bring out the glory of this hidden universe.

Painted Collagraphs

This is a fun two-day workshop where students will learn how to create mixed-media paintings from a printed collagraph enhanced with colored mediums. Using cardboard and heavy paper, students will design and make their own image plates. With oil-based inks, they will roll and print from them onto rag paper and then develop their images with gouache staining, acrylic paints and colored pencils.

Paper Heart Lights

Add beautiful illumination with 3 dimensional heart lanterns always make a statement in a room or for the perfect occasion.

Creating Pate de Verre Forms

After watching a demo on how to make glass sculptural work from tiny pieces of fractured glass (pate de verre), students will make their own 6" glass sculptural form. Glass will be colored with permanent glass powders and embellished with other glass frit, stringer, confetti, etc. Students will arrange to pick up their finished fused pieces at the Schack the following week or pay to have the work shipped to their homes.

Getting Real with Resin

Learn to work with ICE Resin, a non-toxic jeweler's grade resin that gives you endless possibilities for your jewelry designs! Pour the resin into a bezel setting or silicone mold, or even use it over paper. You can use lots of different images and materials with ICE Resin that will be sure to get your creativity running wild! You will be able to carefully take your piece with you after class, or come back the next day to pick it up.
