Acrylic Painting I

Alcohol Inks

Students will explore the world of alcohol ink, using a variety of colors, including metallics, to create abstracts or abstract landscapes and florals.

They will learn the characteristics of alcohol ink, and several techniques to manipulate the ink such as blowing with a straw, making color washes, misters, daubers, how to use medium and alcohol, and finish with rubber stamps.

Beginning/Intermediate Silversmithing

Beginning students will learn how to fabricate jewelry from metal sheet and wire.  Begin with basic skills such as forging, soldering and setting cabochon stones.  Learn to use a jeweler's saw and other hand tools.

Ceramic Pumpkins or Skeleton Bowls

Explore what fused glass is all about while making an 8" round or square plate.  All you need to bring is your creativity!  Glass will be fired outside of class and ready for pick up at the Schack Art Center at a later date.

Decorative Fused Glass Lantern

You will be creating a beautiful decorative lantern with fused panels to enjoy outdoors or indoors.

You will learn basic fusing concepts in this class. Students will create four custom fused glass panels using frit, stringers, nuggets and enamel paints.

Enameling on Copper

Enameling is the art of fusing powdered glass to metal. This class will teach the three basic techniques of enameling. Students will learn to stencil, cloisonne and chambleve on copper.

Filigree Techniques

Learn to create beautiful silver wirework jewelry and improve your soldering skills! Filigree jewelry is made all over the world, from Thailand to Norway to Mexico and everywhere in between. In this class, you will learn how to make these graceful and intricate pieces yourself. We will explore how to construct sterling silver wire frames to create forms that are lightweight but strong. We'll then explore different soldering methods to fill the frames with fine filigree wires. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with chip solder, paste solder, and dry powdered solder. You will leave with a pair of filigree earrings, a pendant, or both. This is an intermediate-level course; some experience with soldering is required.

Fluid Acrylics: Exploring Intuitive Abstract Painting

Fun-dational Color Pencil and Mixed Media

Playful mixed media experiments are collaged in a repurposed book - resulting in a unique art journal full of tips, tricks, and important "fun-dational" drawing and shading examples! But wait there's more! Next, use your amazing art journal experiences to create two (or more) artworks with individualized step by step guidance! It's a two-fer! Create a mixed media art journal and finished artworks in the same class!

Fused Geometric Wall Clock

You will be creating a bright colorful contemporary wall clock which will add a splash of color to your home or office.

Students will learn basic fusing concepts and will have a chance to use frit, stringers, and nuggets with other geometric shapes of glass. We will discuss how to drill a hole in your project and the placement of the hole for proper mounting on the wall.

Fused Snowman Cookie Plate

Looking for the perfect plate for Santa's cookies and reindeer treats?

This class will give you a chance to create a fused glass project even if you have never worked with any kind of glass.

Students will learn basic fusing concepts and will have a chance to use frit with the precut shapes.

HOT WAX: Beginning Encaustic Painting

In this workshop beginning encaustic students will receive complete basic encaustic painting instruction. This will include history and safety information on encaustic painting, a complete overview of the materials including medium, paint, tools, brushes and the hot palette, encaustic medium making instruction and DIY recipe, fusing fundamentals with heat guns and blow torches, substrate (supports) overview and preparation including smooth vs textured surface techniques, preparing hot wax paints, and learning how to do color layering and suspension. By the end of the day each student will have completed multiple practice boards and four finished abstract encaustic paintings on wood panels.

Hallo-Weave Happy Hour!

Join Mia for a lovely afternoon weaving project to show off your holiday spirit! (And have a tasty beverage, of course.)

Class cost includes a pre-warped circular frame loom and a boatload of seasonally inspired materials. There will probably be at least a little bit of black lace floating around on the table around Halloween, and all the red and green; blue and white; definitely some tinsel or other sparkly fun you could want!. ;)

Intro to Gel Plate Printmaking

Learn how to create unique monoprints without a press using a gel printing plate. In this class we'll use an 8" x 10" gel plate with acrylic paint, founds textures, and DIY stencils and stamps. We'll work to create prints that can stand on their own, but gel printed papers are also wonderful for collage, cards, art journals, or other mixed media projects.

Intro to Needle Felting

Intro to Silk Painting

Discover the simple, yet exquisite technique of painting on silk. Learn how to trace the outline of your design with gutta resist, then touch the dyes on with a brush and watch them flow. Choose from the instructor's patterns or create your own. Completing a 22"x22" scarf will teach you the basic skills of design, color mixing, blending and texturizing. Simple enough for absolute beginners, this is also an exciting way for more experienced painters to transfer their talents to fabric.

Lampwork Glass Beadmaking

If you're fascinated by baubles, bangles, and beads, this one day class is for you. You will make many glass beads as you learn the basic skills of heating Moretti (soft) glass, applying it to a mandrel, and shaping it with tools.

Lampworking: Make a Pipe

This class is a one day workshop of practicing working with hollow glass to make a functional pipe.

Learn to Crochet: The Magic Circle

In this class we explore the art and skills associated with crochet! If you know how to crochet, but don't know about the Magic Circle, join us for a crochet skill that will open up a world of new projects! I use the magic circle in all one my crochet plushies. 

If you have never crocheted in your life, good news! This is also the class for you! Learning how to crochet means you can make your own scarves hats and slippers. You can learn how to make plushies to give away as gifts or keep for yourself.

Tiny Glass Pumpkins - An Intro to Lampwork Glass

Create small glass pumpkins by heating glass rods in the flame of a bench-mounted torch and transferring the molten gather onto the end of a stainless steel mandrel. Learn to control the glass and form it into a sphere which can then be shaped into a pumpkin while still molten. A great introduction to the basics of manipulating hot glass on a very small scale!
