Painting on Copper

Explore the unique beauty of oil painting on copper in this hands-on portraiture workshop. Working from a live model, students will develop their portrait-painting skills while learning how to handle oil paint on the distinctive surface of a copper panel. The instructor will guide students through portrait fundamentals while demonstrating techniques specific to painting on copper, including how to take advantage of its smooth, luminous qualities.
Designed for intermediate and advanced painters, this workshop offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of portraiture while exploring an unusual and rewarding painting surface. Students will create a finished portrait on copper to take home.
Materials list to bring to class:
You’re welcome to order these supplies online, but if you have time, we recommend visiting your local art store instead. This gives you a chance to explore the variety of materials available and compare items in person.. ArtSpot Edmonds and Artist & Craftsman Supply are great places. Blick is also a good alternative.
Oil Paint(one 4oz tube or smaller of each color):
*Be cautious not to get water soluble oil paint!
Ivory Black
Burnt Sienna
Titanium White
Raw Umber
Viridian Green
Ultramarine Blue
A container to wash paints in (any container that can double as a brush cleaning and solvent storage is good—a glass jar is ok too!)
A container for linseed oil (a glass jar is ok too!)
2 8" × 10" copper panelsfrom Amazon or directly from Raymar.
1 clove of garlic
Isopropyl alcohol
1 sheet of sandpaper: Any grit is acceptable; 220 grit is recommended.
