Gel Plate Chine-Collé
Date: Sunday,January 31, from 12 pm - 4 pm
Fee: $125/discount with member code
Ages: 18+
Levels: All
Sessions: 1
Instructor: Maren Oates
Location: Schack Art Center, Studios 1 and 2
Traditionally, chine-collé is used with other printmaking methods, such as etching or lithography, to incorporate thin, colorful papers during the printing process. This class explores that idea on the gel plate, teaching students to build layered prints using acrylic paint, found textures, and existing collage papers.
To create these “faux” chine-collé prints, we will spend much of the workshop focusing on the single-pull or dry-pull method of gel printing. All workshop supplies are provided, including a variety of collage papers for students to use. Students are also welcome to bring their own papers from home.
We will spend a few minutes at the start of the workshop warming up our gel plates by creating collage papers that work well with this technique.
Students will leave class with a variety of collage papers and, depending on drying time, hopefully one or two finished chine-collé gel prints.
All levels are welcome in this workshop. Some prior gel printing experience will help students get the most out of the techniques we’ll explore.
An apron is recommended. Please dress for mess!
