In this one-day workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of carving a wooden kitchen spoon, one of the most practical and rewarding introductions to woodcarving. You’ll be guided through the full process, including wood selection, understanding grain direction, preparing spoon blanks, safe and effective carving techniques, shaping the bowl and handle, and applying a traditional food-safe oil finish.
This hands-on class is designed for beginners, but it is also valuable for anyone wanting to build stronger carving skills. By the end of the workshop, students will leave with a handcrafted spoon and the confidence to continue future carving projects at home.
Students will need to bring to class:
1- FLEXCUT Detail Knife
KN13
2- PFEIL "Swiss Made" Intermediate #7 Gouge, 10mm Bent Gouge
3- Carving glove
*Students should plan to bring the required tools listed above. If you’re registering at the last minute and don’t have time to order online, or if you prefer not to shop through Amazon, Woodcraft of Seattle in Georgetown is another option. They carry all of the required tools, and we recommend checking their current inventory before visiting.
We will also have a few extra tools available in class for students who forget something or don’t have exactly what is needed. If purchasing the tools would prevent you from taking the class, please reach out to us—we may be able to provide tools for you to use during class.
