Reticulated & Fused Band with Stone Workshop

Reticulated & Fused Band with Stone Workshop
$275.00

Dates: Saturday & Sunday, August 29–30, from 10 am to 4 pm
Fee: $ 275/discount with member code
Ages: 18+
Level: Intermediate
Sessions: 2
Instructor: Tamara Kelly
Location: Schack Art Center, Metalsmithing Studio

In this hands-on metalsmithing workshop, students will create a unique sterling silver band with rich reticulated texture, bronze accents, and a bezel-set stone. Participants will explore how controlled heat transforms metal into organic patterns while learning fusing and stone-setting techniques.

The band starts as plain metal and, through reticulation, develops ripples and natural texture. Fusing adds contrasting layers and depth, while the bezel-set stone provides a polished finishing touch. This process encourages a balance between technical precision and the expressive beauty of fire-formed metal.

Students may bring recycled silver scraps (old rings, earrings, or other gold or silver jewelry). Additional recycled metal will be available for purchase from the instructor during class. For questions regarding potential supply fees, please get in touch with the class coordinator at rchernow@schack.org

By the end of class, each student will take home a finished, wearable ring—textured, fused, and stone-set—completely unique.

What to Bring

  • Closed-toe shoes

  • Hair ties for long hair

  • Notebook for sketches and notes

  • Optional: personal cabochon stone (flat-backed, 6–12 mm)

  • Optional: recycled silver scraps or old jewelry, old gold pieces, rings, chains, or a single earring

Gel Printing: From Play to Plan
$295.00

Date: Saturday & Sunday, September 19 - 20, from 10 am to 4 pm

Fee: $295/discount with member code

Ages: 18+

Levels: Beginning/Intermediate

Sessions: 2

Instructor: Maren Oates

Location: Schack Art Center, Studios 1 and 2

In this two-day workshop, students will explore the creative possibilities of gel plate printmaking using an 8” × 10” gel plate. We’ll begin by experimenting with the playful, spontaneous side of the process—layering colors, textures, and marks to discover how this versatile, non-traditional printing method works.

Once everyone becomes comfortable with the materials and techniques, we’ll shift toward a more intentional approach, using our prints to build layered abstract compositions. Along the way, students will learn how to create depth, balance, and visual interest through thoughtful color choices, pattern, and texture.

This class encourages curiosity and experimentation while also guiding students toward developing their own unique visual language. By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a collection of vibrant prints and a deeper understanding of how to combine spontaneity with design.

While some gel plate printmaking experience may be helpful, it is not required to fully participate in this workshop.

All supplies are provided by the instructor, but an apron and sketchbook are recommended.

There will be a 30-minute lunch break each day.
