Ages: 16+
Levels: All Levels
Sessions: 3
Instructor: JoElle Gragilla
Location: The Jetty Bar & Grille, 1028 13th Street, Everett, WA 98201

This watercolor workshop introduces the fundamentals of painting and how to take those skills outdoors to work en plein air—painting directly from life. Slowing down, observing closely, and responding to the landscape are at the heart of this class, as nature becomes both the subject and the teacher.

We’ll meet each day at The Jetty Bar & Grille, located on the scenic Everett waterfront. After a brief demonstration and discussion of techniques—such as washes, wet-into-wet and wet-into-dry painting, and color mixing—we’ll disperse to nearby waterfront locations to paint the marina, islands, mountains, and working harbor.

All levels are welcome, from complete beginners to those with some experience. The class focuses on essential techniques you’ll return to again and again while building confidence painting outdoors.

All materials are provided for use during the workshop.

Please bring lunch or snacks, a water bottle, and whatever you need to be comfortable working outside—such as a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and/or a portable seat. We will plan to paint near the grassy areas around the waterfront; shaded spots are often available, though as this is a public space, they cannot be guaranteed.

Fee: $115 discount with member code

Ages: 18+

Levels: All

Sessions: 1

Instructor: Maren Oates

Location: Schack Art Center, Studios 1 and 2

In this workshop, students will be introduced to Gel Plate Printmaking using an 8" x 10" gel plate and acrylic paint. Our goal will be to create botanical monoprints and monotypes that can stand on their own, but gel-printed papers are also excellent material for collages, cards, art journals, or other mixed-media projects.

Unlike many traditional printmaking techniques, gel printing has a minimal setup and does not require the use of a press, making it possible to do it from almost anywhere.

Students will learn:

  • A basic understanding of how paints and papers may impact gel prints, including thick vs. thin papers, opaque vs. transparent layers, and “What is the right amount of paint?”

  • • How to use botanical items, such as leaves, ferns, and flowers as textures and masks for gel printing.

  • • How to clean, care for, and store a gel printing plate.

Designs will be created using a curated selection of colored sheet glass for added depth, pattern, and expression.

Throughout the class, participants will learn foundational kiln-forming techniques, including glass cutting, composition, color layering, and safe studio practices. No prior experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to experiment with color, form, and light.

Sessions: 3

In this beginner-friendly course, students will learn the essential techniques that professional illustrators and comic artists use to bring figures to life—working directly from a nude live model each session. Drawing from life allows students to observe real movement, proportion, and gesture in real time, strengthening both accuracy and expression.

We’ll explore what makes a pose dynamic—and why—starting with the core foundations of gesture, proportion, anatomy, and the line of action. Through demonstrations and one-on-one guidance, students will learn how to build a strong, expressive structure in their drawings using rhythm lines, the Reilly Method, and other fundamental tools for creating movement and energy.

By the end of the class, students will complete a dynamic figure drawing and leave with the skills and confidence to infuse future work with liveliness, clarity, and expression.
