Shibori Indigo Dyeing Workshop for Kids

Fee: $155/ discount with member code
Ages: 7-16
Levels: All
Sessions: 1
Instructor: Whitney Buckingham-Beechie
Location: Schack Art Center, Studio 1
Explore the traditional Japanese art of Shibori in this hands-on indigo dyeing workshop just for kids! Students will learn about the origins of Shibori and be introduced to several classic resist-dyeing techniques used to create intricate patterns on fabric.
Students will fold, twist, wrap, scrunch, and bind fabric to create areas that resist the dye before immersing their pieces into a natural indigo dye vat. While the fabric absorbs the dye, students will enjoy a short presentation and video exploring the history and cultural traditions of Shibori.
The most exciting moment comes during the “big reveal,” when students remove their bindings and unfold their fabric to discover the one-of-a-kind patterns created through the dyeing process. This workshop offers a fun, creative, and slightly messy afternoon of experimentation and discovery while learning a traditional textile art form.
Please note: We will be working with natural indigo dye, which permanently stains fabric and can temporarily stain skin. Dress for mess, including shoes, and avoid wearing clothing you would not want dyed. Latex gloves will be provided. If you get some on your skin, it will wash off, EVENTUALLY. Usually, a few days.

Sessions: 1
Instructor: Adam Wallace

Explore the expressive possibilities of glass in this hands-on workshop focused on the freeze-and-fuse technique. Participants will create small fused glass sculptures using colored glass powders and silicone molds inspired by natural forms such as flowers, shells, crystals, and succulents.

Through this process, each piece takes form before being frozen, de-molded, and kiln-fired, allowing the powdered glass to transform into solid, dimensional glass.
Throughout the class, students will gain an understanding of how to properly work with glass powders and slurry, including techniques for creating visual depth and controlling composition within mold-based forms. A kiln schedule will be shared so participants can follow the full transformation process from raw material to finished object.
