This watercolor workshop introduces the fundamentals of painting and how to take those skills outdoors to work en plein air—painting directly from life. Slowing down, observing closely, and responding to the landscape are at the heart of this class, as nature becomes both the subject and the teacher.

The first full day of class will take place at Schack Art Center, where we’ll begin with demonstrations and practice of techniques such as washes, wet-into-wet and wet-into-dry painting, and color mixing. On the second and third days, we’ll meet for the first hour of class at the Jetty Bar and Grille on Everett’s scenic waterfront and then head out from there to paint the marina, islands, mountains, and working harbor.

All levels are welcome, from complete beginners to those with some experience. The class focuses on essential techniques you’ll return to again and again while building confidence painting outdoors.

All materials are provided for use during the workshop.

Please bring lunch or snacks, a water bottle, and whatever you need to be comfortable working outside—such as a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and/or a portable seat. We will plan to paint near the grassy areas around the waterfront; shaded spots are often available, though as this is a public space, they cannot be guaranteed.

The natural world around us is an infinite source of beauty and inspiration. It’s no wonder that it has served as a subject for countless artists over the years. In this class, we will learn to paint natural landscapes with oil.

Students will learn the basics of oil painting through both instruction and hands-on experience. Beyond basics, the student will also learn color theories and landscape-specific techniques to paint texture and form from natural elements such as sky, water, trees, light, and shadow.

The resources and techniques learned in this class will form a foundation for the student to continue finding their own style in oil painting landscapes.
